Happy Bike to Work Week!

Happy Bike to Work Week!

May is National Bike Month and as the weather warms up, so does the number of people taking out their bikes to enjoy the nice weather. There are a number of benefits to riding your bike including: saving money, a new mode of transportation, boosting your health/mind, saving time, helping the environment, and exploring your community (both natural and urban)!  After all that, what better reason to start implementing more bike time in your day than joining in Bike to Work Week?San Francisco

Bike to Work Week 2013 is May 13th-17th, and National Bike to Work Day is May 17th.  As our office is in San Francisco, we joined in on the city’s Bike to Work Day on May 9th with tens of thousands of participants! Plenty of activities were waiting for the bikers including safety workshops, parties, raffles, and giveaways. 25 Energizer stations, complete with volunteers cheering on bikers, handed out free snacks, beverages, and gift bag goodies. Bike mechanics, or “bike doctors” were even provided for basic bike maintenance for any bike that needed some extra TLC. Clark, our Fitness Director, got some great pictures of his scenic commute from Mill Valley to San Francisco. It’s amazing how many normally overlooked sights are discovered and appreciated when we take the time to bike. Check out his pictures here:  http://ow.ly/kUWby

Built for Multisport Athletes

We get it, you do more than run. You bike, you run, you ski, you’re a multisport athlete and need a GPS system for your active lifestyle.

Here in San Francisco, we’re blessed with mild weather and access to mountains, trails and water. As an outdoor athlete, it’s hard to stay focused on a single sport. Plans change with the weather. If it’s sunny – I’m on Mount Tam. If it’s stormy – I’m in Tahoe. If it’s just right – I’m surfing. When developing Switch, we approached the design with this in mind. We wanted to create a single device for all sports. A big part of that is the ability to transition from sport-to-sport, or more importantly, from wrist to bike. For this reason, we created the Multisport Mounting Kit.

The Multisport Mounting Kit is a three part system:

Bike Mount

Bike mount on the bike-0-Large-Pop-up-ImageThe bike mount attaches to your handle bars or stem with rubber bands. The kit includes spare bands and various sizes to ensure a secure fit on any bike. While most users attach the mount to the stem, it can also be mounted to your handle bars. The mount has a cross-hatched back, which makes it compatible with both stems and handlebars.

Wrist Mount

Wrist Mount with StrapThe wrist mount simply attaches around your wrist like a watch. It uses the same wrist straps that come with the watch. These straps can be moved from the mount to the watch with an included screw driver. I’ll do this when I’m marathon training and off the bike for couple months to achieve a slimmer profile.

Device

Lastly, the brain of the system. Switch and Switch Up move between the mounts with ease. It takes a few tries, but once you get it, it’s old hat. Simply follow these steps:
IF

  1. Attach the wrist strap to your wrist and bike mount to your bike.
  2. Snap Switch into the mount by putting the bottom of Switch in first and then push down on the top.
  3. To remove Switch, hold the sides of the watch(at the top) and pull the top of the watch out of the mount.

Note – there are no buttons to press. Simply grab the sides (at the top) and pull back.

The Multisport Mounting Kit comes with Switch Up, but can also be used with Switch. The kit comes with a screw driver to remove the wrist straps from Switch and attach them to the Wrist Mount. Once removed, you’ll see that Switch and Switch Up have the exact same casing, making both devices compatible with the mounts.

If you’re a multisport athlete that runs and rides, consider the Multisport Mounitng Kit. It will improve your transition times and you’ll be better informed.

Overview

This is the third software update for the Magellan Switch Series. Most of the work that went into this release was behind the scenes work that will be utilized by our next release. The next release, which will likely occur within the next 2 weeks, includes major improvements to device performance and current speed & pace accuracy.

This update will unfortunately clear your history and settings because we have to re-partition the flash memory to make room for certain features. There’s actually a manual procedure for backing up and restoring your history and settings if you want to go through the effort to retain your data.
